Terms I use

For me, "paintings" involve paint applied to a surface. Some are sketches, and some are completed works.

Sketches capture colors and impressions, and experiment with light, contrast, and composition.

In most cases, I use them as references for later paintings.

Works in progress began with the intention of completing them, framing them, and displaying them.

Completed paintings are works with that added something, perhaps finesse, usually by plan but sometimes by serendipity.

The final label has little to do with the time that went into the work. Sometimes, I realize a sketch is perfect (and a completed painting), as it is.

Likewise, some paintings seem completed at the time. Later, I realize they didn't achieve their full potential. Some need a little work, others are best sanded smooth and painted over.
