Changed palette color
Jan 31st, 2008 | By eileen morey | Category: Advice for artistsIn the past, I’ve enjoyed the convenience of a disposable paper palette for my work. They’re generally white paper coated with a plastic or waxy surface. However, after reading several books and articles that recommended switching to a neutral-toned painting palette, I bought a wooden palette to see if it really makes a difference.
The next step was to seal the palette so that it doesn’t suck the oil out of my paints. I used a clear acrylic spray for that, and covered the top with at least three or four layers.
Finally, I set the palette up last night with my main oil colors — expecting to paint this morning’s sunrise– and the effect was amazing. I’m truly astonished that the tone (light-to-dark) of each color is so much more obvious on the neutral background… well, it’s inspiring.
Alas, I woke up to cloudy skies this morning. By mid-afternoon, sunny skies are predicted, so I’ll get out to paint then. I may even throw my easel into the car and paint at the park.
Seeing my colors glowing on the new palette is an inspiration in itself.
